Garfield School 1896-1969
Charles Franklin Sparrell
Charles F. Sparrell, the architect of Garfield School, was born in Boston in 1852, the son of John and Elizabeth M. Sparrell. By 1881, he had received his architectural training, and was working for the Columbus firm of Hege and Company, a lumber yard and construction company. He soon opened his own office and advertised himself as an architect and superintendent. During the first few years, he was the leading architect in Columbus, capturing most of the contracts for major public buildings and for residences of prominent citizens.
