Mrs. Penington Killed
School, Art Department Lose Valuable Teacher
Cold weather and snow of the last few weeks caused hazard and hardship for most people in this area.
Even for those who kept indoors there were reduced temperatures to add to the general discomfort.
But for all those interested in Attucks High School, there was no greater pro¬ blem than the loss of a teacher, a victim of ice-covered streets.
Mrs. Judith Penington lost her life Jan. 13 when her car skidded into the path of a semi. The truck rammed her compact station wagon and dragged it 250 feet about 9:30 p.m.
Mrs. Penington died of massive in¬ ternal injuries, according to Hamilton County Deputy Coroner Jerry Lowe. The accident took place near Carmel.
Mrs. Penington worked hard to enable her art students to produce the best work they could. In the car with here when she died were several safety posters her stu¬ dents had produced.
She was proud of her students and eager for them to have deserved recogni¬ tion.
Students Respond
"She always enjoyed being around kids a whole lot," says one of her students, Becky Owens, sophomore.
Junior Kevin Wells agrees. "She was fun to be with and if you tried you could really learn something from her." He adds, "Some teachers bring personal pro¬ blems into the classroom, but she was always in high spirits."
Senior Teresa Murray pointed to a piece of ceramics. "She made me that hand-built pot. Today I was supposed to

bring her some Greek recipes, because
she liked Greek food and I'm Greek."
Motorcycle Trips
Others remember Mrs. Penington's pride in her motorcycle on which she took solo trips south. She had had an accident with her 'cycle last fall.
Art department head Kay Clay points out that, "Her teaching and students meant more to her than anything except her art." She adds that Mrs. Penington was dedicated to art and often exhibited in art shows.
"Still she was just as excited when her students won as when she won herself," adds Mrs. Clay.
She also notes that Mrs. Penington, who had just earned her master's degree, had a "tremendous zest for life and especially enjoyed the outdoors."
The school loses with the death of Mrs. Penington a fine and dedicated teacher, one that the art department, the entire student body and staff will miss.
