*fv ECLIPSES OF THE YEJR 1832.
There will be only two eclipses this year, both at the Sun. ,
The 1st an eclipse of the Sun on the 1st day of February, at 15 minutes after 5 o'clock rn the
evening, invisible. "■ •
The 2d an eclipse of the Sun on the 27 th .day of July, at 54 minutes after 8 o'clock in the mojn-
in, visible as follows:
feegtnning at Philadelphia at 6 o'clock 52 minutes in fhe morning, IMiddle, 7 o'clock 36 minutesj
End, 8 o'clock 32 minutes. Digits eclipsed 4& on the Sun's south part.
A transit of Mercury over Ihe Sun's disk will be seen this year on the 5(h day of May over all
the United States. At 5 o'clock 30 minutes ifi the morning the planet will be seen on the centre
line of the upper part of the Sufi, resembling a little round black spot; from thence it will be seen
moving towards the western edge of the Sun until at 10 o'clock 5*6 minutes in the morning, when
the planet will have totally passed over the Sun's disk.
The year 1S32 -will be rendered memorable, also, by the return to the perihelion of two of the
three comets, whose orbits have been discovered to be eliptical, viz. that known as Encke's, whose
period is about 1212 days, which will pass the perihelion about the 7th of May; and that known as
Biela's, whose period is abefut 2460 days, which will pass the perihelion on the 27th of November,
and the perigee on the 22d of October, when it will be distant from the earth about 51 millions of
miles. The lat(er, when nearest to the Sun, will have an elongation of about 12fl-°, and be about
S0° nearer the elevated pole than the Sun, and will, consequently, be in a very'favorable situation for observation.
