NATO CONFERENCE VISITORS
SEE MORRIS-BUTLER MUSEUM
Our Morris-Butler Museum received international attention
recently when it was the site of the Women's Affairs Program
of the NATO Conference on Cities.
The visitors were from all over the world and interpreters
were kept busy translating the words of the Christamore Aid
Society Volunteer Docents as they guided the guests from
room to room while lecturing.
Museum Chairman Linda McLaughlin arranged for small Conference on Cities flags to be tied
along with blue delphinium at the
entrances of the Museum, and
the traditional red, white, and
blue bunting to be swagged from
the porches and galleries. The
Resident Supervisor, Mrs. Barbara Carson, greeted guests at
the door in an authentic Victorian costume designed especially for the occasion by Mr. J.
Murray of J. Murray Creations.
Mr. Murray presented the original one-of-a-kind gown to the
Museum as a contribution on his
behalf.
HLFI Officers received the guests as they arrived. Decorative Consultant Roy Hensley was very much in demand as he
explained the process by which the building was restored and
the decorations authenticated. Mr. Chester R. Smith, Chairman of the Acquisitions Committee, was kept busy answering
multitudinous questions regarding the origin and date of various furnishings and objects of art.
After our visitors had completed the tour of the Museum,
they were honored at a sherry reception in our newly completed reception rooms. Following the departure of NATO
guests the officers, directors, Christamore Aid Society Volun-

teers, Committee Chairmen, and workers were feted with a
buffet luncheon as an expression of appreciation for their
many weeks of planning and working to make the occasion a
successful one.
PATHOLOGY BUILDING RECOGNIZED
After many years of neglect the Pathology Building at Central State Hospital, the oldest structure in Indiana built for
medical education, may soon return to medical use. When the
building came to the attention of HLFI, H. Roll McLaughlin
(who is also a member of the Historic American Buildings
Survey Advisory Board) surveyed the building and evaluated
its architectural and historical significance.
Architect McLaughlin pointed out to Governor Edgar Whit-
comb and Director John Lloyd, of the Indiana Department of
Natural Resources, that the building should be recorded and
preserved. He then emphasized that preservation of such a
building is best when it can be accompanied by current usefulness.
The Indiana Neuromuscular Research Laboratory needs a
new home and the solution might be to relocate the research
laboratory in the old Pathology Building and thus return the
structure to medical use. By so doing, the landmark could be
saved as a place important in the history of medical education.
The building was constructed on the grounds of Central
State in 1895. It was in continuous use for medical education
until 1955. Once again, historic preservation in Indiana is
receiving a helping hand from HLFI.
