THE July 28 statement by the Provisionals pledging
to destroy their arms means they should disband
completely and rename themselves as the Six-
County wing of Fianna Fail.
Like de Valera's party in
the 1920s they have deserted the revolutionary road
and embraced the constitutional path in the partitionist institutions of Stormont
and Leinster House. They
have betrayed
Republicanism and will
now turn on faithful
Republicans as Fianna
Fail's Broy Harriers did in
the 1930s.
Media observers have
commented on the political
deception practised for
years by Gerry Adams. In
this he has as his exemplar
the duplicity practised by
de Valera — selling out the
Republic in the name ofthe
Republic.
Republican Sinn Fein
President Ruairi 6
Bradaigh "A rump will
remain at local level to
continue the harassment of
faithful Republicans who
fundraise for the prisoner's
dependents, distribute
Easter lilies, sell the
SAOIRSE newspaper or
picket for political status
for Republican prisoners.
"This harassment can be
expected to increase into
persecution when the
Provos finally don the
enemy uniform and join
the ranks of the British
police force in Ireland.
This will be a far cry from
the heroic strip-strike by
the blanket men in the H-
Blocks of Long Kesh.
"The Provisional slogans
of 'No Unionist Veto', 'No
Return to Stormont' and
'Not a Bullet not an
Ounce', ring very hollowly
now. How on earth can
British rule in Ireland be
ended, as the Provos claim,
by accepting and imple
menting that rule through
Stormont and other partitionist institutions?
"As Republican Sinn
Fein has forecast they are
being slowly and steadily
absorbed into the English
system in Ireland. Today's
statement may improve
their chances of taking part
in a coalition administration in Leinster House but
will hardly help them
towards a Stormont
Executive.
"Dr Paisley's DUP will
demand very humiliating
conditions from the Provos
before allowing them to
participate. Eventually they
will be unrecognisable."
August 1, as this paper
went to press, marked the
90th anniversary of
Padraig Pearse's oration at
the grave of O'Donovan
Rossa in 1915.
Pearse's words then ring

true today in answer to the
ongoing collaboration with
British rule in Ireland:
"The defenders of this
Realm have worked well in
secret and in the open.
They think that they have

think they have foreseen
everything. They think that
they have provided against
everything; but the fools,
the fools, the fools! They
have left us our Fenian
dead, and while Ireland
holds these graves, Ireland
unfree shall never be at
peace."
IN the same month that the Provisionals issued their
surrender statement true Republicans took on the
forces of British occupation in Belfast. Following the
forcing of an Orange parade through the nationalist
Ardoyne area of Belfast on July 12, which led to
protests throughout the day volunteers of the
Continuity IRA threw two blast bombs at the British
soldiers and police in response to the firing of plastic
bullets on the protesting residents.
Plastic bullets fired by the number of local people.
British Crown forces injured a Following this, according to an
interview in the
Andersonstown News on July
14 the Continuity IRA said it
had considered firing on the
British forces with automatic
weapons when the British
Crown forces opened fire on
the Ardoyne residents but
decided against this because
"we were fearful that many
people could be injured.
Instead we decided to use blast
bombs on the RUC\PSNI. The
CIRA spokesperson also
denied claims by the
RUCXPSNI that British forces
were pulling out of Ardoyne
when they came under attack.
"They were firing plastic
bullets when we attacked
them."
