40p usa 24 per year 384700 unemployed june 1992 sees almost 385,0000 people unemployed in the 32 counties the real jobless figures would include another 200,000 from ireland who have emigrated in the past five years and a further 40,000 are engaged in so-called job schemes how will unemployment be affected by the maastricht treaty ? see pages 6-7 inside danish no result a massive blow to euro-bullies shout stop to maastricht the landmark victory of the no campaign in the danish referendum on the maastricht treaty on june 2 gives a tremendous boost to all those groups campaigning for the rejection of the 26-county constitutional amendment on june 18 next having witnessed the failure of the maastricht treaty in its first test before the people in denmark the dublin administration still persists in the folly of presenting a failed document with no legal standing for approval by the electorate under article 236 of the treaty of rome the legal basis for the european community all amendments to it such as the maastricht treaty must be unanimous therefore the maastricht treaty is redundant and cannot come into effect all eyes are now on ireland to see what message that the acceleration of the k we are going to do the establishment politicians are facing an increasingly difficult task in persuading the people of the 26 counties that what the danish people have rejected they should accept if the relatively affluent and strongly independent people of denmark can see the pitfalls of the european union treaty surely the disadvantages for a less well-off country like ireland must be all the greater the danish are to be congratulated for refusing to be browbeaten by their polit icians union leaders and others in the rul ing elite who stood to benefit in a europ ean superstate one of these euro-bullies ec commissioner henning christophersen threatened the loss of 200,000 jobs if the treaty was rejected yet they all completely misjudged the mood of the people who did not like being told what to do as the leader of the left-wing danish socialist people's party holger k neilsen stated people power over came the combined forces of the political economic and media establishments here too it can happen in the 26 counties also if enough people take the opportunity to vote no and give the politicians the present centralising economic policies is not in the interests of the ordinary people who have had enough of record unem ployment one-third living in poverty and one-in-two of our children emigrating the threat to irish neutrality has be come more real than ever in the past weeks with the blatant decision by albert reynolds before the referendum that the dublin administration would become permanent observers at the meetings of the western european union weu the military wing of the ec the weu is based on nuclear weapons and can act in any part of the world unlike nato which is limited to europe making it the ideal vehicle for a european superstate s intervention force to protect ec economic interests around the globe the argument of the yes lobby that we should influence the weu from with in has been rightly compared to joining the mafia to fight crime would you die for europe ? irish voters should follow these cour ageous examples on june 18 and vote a resounding no to a treaty that has obviously failed woire tow bodenstown sunday june 14.1991 buses dublin virgin megastore 1.30pm galway eyre square 1030am p speaker - leo martin belfast
