Mary Pope Chage was born in Marion County, Indiana. The farm then
owned by the pioneer Pope family, is now part of Indianapolis, and Mary
Pope was raised tnere during the Civil War.
Mar. 23 - 1861 Mary Pope, daughter of Peninnah Mills and Abner James Pope.
Mar. 16 - 1886 Mary Pope married Timothy Chase in Chicago, 111.
Home*. Aurora9 111, from date of her marriage to her death.
June 23 - 1921 Mary Pope Chase died in Indianapolis at the home of her
sister, Julia Pope Shiel, on North Meridian St. Interment
of her body was in the cemetery in Aurora, 111. where the
bodies of her husband and son were buried.
I have two of her pictures - an oilpainting - canvas 18 X 23 inches-
of a 9 Woodland Dell, n and a smaller water color of a corner of a country
cottage and Garden. My niece, May DaCamara, who is also an artist, has a
studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico, but 1 have not her address, she may have
some of her Grand-Aunt Mary Pope Chase1s work. I will let you know if so.
have you any record of an artist named ^osepfo Ji&ton who did portrait
work in Indiana in 1846 ? The following page explains my interest in him.
