Caption from Gray's Book: Lockefield Gardens was a model public housing complex when it was built between 1935 and 1938. The units were closed in 1978 by U.S. District Court Judge S. Hugh Dillin as part of his decision in the Indianapolis Public Schools desegregation case, and some of the original units were torn down. Fears that IUPUI would take over Lockefield Gardens sparked deep concern in some segments of the community. In the 1980s the remaining units were rehabilitated, and new ones were built to provide housing for the 1987 Pan Am Games. After the games, the apartments were rented out to IUPUI students and others.Caption from Gray's Book: Lockefield Gardens was a model public housing complex when it was built between 1935 and 1938.
