The Blanket

President Patrick Hurley

James Patrick Ryan • 17 August 2006

Imagine my shock when I got back to the house on Wednesday evening, having attended my weekly ILIR meeting to find that my Aunty Mags in Tipperary had left a message that I was to read Patrick Hurley`s scurrilous composition at your website.

Knowing Mr. Hurleys penchant to underwhelm and bore his immediate parish, audience and reader, my mind attempted to conjure the depths he had newly found.

Having completed a semi-perusal of his latest outburst, I had to read it again, and can only conclude that he has consigned all his functioning brain activity to medical research.

For someone that has always been a bit of a thorny wire, politically, he can do what he likes with whatever loosely passed for a brain. That`s his own business.

His attack on Immigration reform may be seriously misguided, and we`re all just going to have to try harder to make the world align itself more with the Hurley Model.

It`s probably acceptable to speak out against politicians and figures in the public eye, but that hardly gives anyone the right to engage in the gratuitious, condescending manner that Hurley throws around like rice at an Oriental wedding.

It probably will rankle with some Irish people that an Irish person would break ranks, and launch some "friendly fire", but that`s the nature of the game. It hurts everyone at ILIR, however that Mr. Hurley basically takes a few shots at people that didn`t just pull themselves up by the bootstraps, they pulled everyone else up too!

Taoiseach Ahern, Minister Ahern, Michael Woods, Niall O Dowd and Ciaran Staunton have all stepped up to the plate for the Irish undocumented. However, even if they didn`t, it wouldn`t make them any bit less likeable or honourable.

Hopefully, Mr. Hurley can rise above his present difficulties, maybe he could even come to an ILIR meeting, we`re all Irish people and forgive easily.

That`s if he can break himself away from Rep King`s campaign, whose district has been reassessed by the Cook Report as likely Republican, down from Solid Republican.
