My
own view is that the area around Arthur Square, Arthur
Street, Cornmarket and Ann Street should be available
for a "street market" rather than Royal
Avenue. I agree with the comment that the Royal Avenue
area is generally drab and "something should
be done" to make the City Centre more attractive,
but currently, the stalls on the pavements are not
attractive. The traders are providing a service to
the City and are supporting themselves and their families,
which should be applauded and encouraged. However,
I do not think Royal Avenue is the ideal location
to be doing this. By creating a market area around
Arthur Square, something of character would be created
in the interface between Royal Avenue, Donegall Place
and the new development at Victoria Square. Perhaps
we would even see more pubs, cafes and restaurants
opening in the, dare I suggest, "New Markets"
giving an additional attraction to shoppers.
