Republican Sinn Fein commemorates Robert Emmet
Des Dalton, Republican Sinn Fein • 18 September 2003

Republican Sinn Fein will be marking the Bi–Centenary of Robert Emmet’s execution in Dublin on Saturday, September 20. Those taking part will assemble at the ‘Garden of Remembrance’, Parnell Square at 1.30pm and parade from there to St Catherine’s Church, Thomas St. where a commemoration ceremony will be held including the laying of wreaths, ballad singing lead by the well known traditional singer, Seamus MacMathuna and an oration by Sean O Bradaigh, author of a recent biography of Robert Emmet, ‘The Bold Robert Emmet’ .

The Blanket carries here a poem from reader Charles J. Murnick:

IN MEMORY OF ROBERT EMMET

Hanged, drawn and quartered September 20, 1803

It was on September Twenty
In the year Eighteen 03
Robert Emmet was hanged and mutilated
Just for wanting liberty.

He had proudly fought for Ireland -
But one thing he could not know
Couple of hundred years later,
Freedom's cause has been laid low.

Emmet's still the darling of Erin,
But his country's occupied -
Official killers and rank traitors
Have marked many out to die.

And our land has been partitioned -
'Twas the land he tried to save;
And, me boys, it's not much better
In that land across the wave.

All censorships exist to prevent any one from challenging current conceptions and existing institutions. All progress is initiated by challenging current conceptions, and executed by supplanting existing institutions. Consequently the first condition of progress is the removal of censorships.
- George Bernard Shaw
