City Council has decided that Factotum the publisher
of The Vacuum will have its agreed funding
withheld until the organisation apologises 'for
any offence caused to Members of the Council and
citizens of the City by previous publications'.
demand for decorum and penitence is bad news for
the freedom of expression of creative groups in
Belfast. It is backed up with a threat of future
censorship insisting that Factotum, 'provides an
assurance that future publications will meet such
criteria as may be established by the Council.'
we are organising a SORRY DAY. This will take place
in December and will involve a special SORRY issue
of The Vacuum, Sorry T-shirts, a Sorry cabaret
and club night and a host of other Sorry events.
We would like other arts organisations and people
concerned about the vitality of culture to be involved
in these events.
are therefore organising a public meeting for anyone
who is concerned about the Council's decision and
its consequences. Come along, find out what is happening
and make your own suggestions as to how we can all
best say Sorry.
