Letter from "West Belfast Anti-War Movement"
(A loose coalition of people from various strands who are in the process of organising)

The events of September 11th shocked and horrified people throughout the world, and the people of Belfast recently paid homage to two fire fighters who tragically lost many friends and colleagues in their brave attempt to rescue survivors. However the war against Afghanistan is not the answer and only serves to create greater destruction on already impoverished people.

Osama Bin Laden has not always been an enemy of the US, he was sent to Afghanistan 20 years ago by the CIA, the Saudi royal family and the Pakistani secret service in order to help US-backed forces in the war against the Russians and to crush other forces in the Afghan resistance movement. Likewise the Taliban regime was supported by US agents working on behalf of oil companies.

The war in Afghanistan is not only wrong, but also hypocritical; the Americans and their allies are fighting the Taliban and the terrorist Osama Bid Laden in name of ‘freedom’, ‘democracy’, and Human rights’, the western values; yet the School of the Americas (recently renamed in Sellafield-style) in the US state of Georgia is a training ground for the worst military leaders/terrorists in the world, who are responsible for millions of deaths and countless human rights abuses. This will never be a target for “the crusade against terrorism”. The US led UN sanctions against Iraq killed over one million people between 1990 and 1998 and, according to the former UN food coordinated in Iraq, Denis Halliday, continue to kill 5,000 children a month. In addition US air strikes have bombed Iraq on average twice a month, including a raid on a village a few days before September 11th. Furthermore US domestic welfare policy has been continuously cut diminishing the living standard and consequently the life expectancy of many working class Americans, a problem that will increase as more funds are given to the military machine. US Multi nationals are also responsible for the sweatshops that reduce millions of people around the globe to a position of near slavery, in a system that represses women and children to a greater extent than the sexist laws of the Taliban.

The people of west Belfast have long been subject to draconian legislation designed to crush the means and ideals of any resistance to the present system, new British and international anti terrorism laws and conventions will only serve to mute our voices. The real terrorists are Bush and Blair who kill thousands through war and slavery. The anti war movement needs people who are willing to stand up and voice their opposition to this bloody war.
